Our Story

Ian came from Canada to Japan in 2003 and quickly fell in love with the city, and then with Ulala.

Together, we dreamed of starting our own cafe business and after having children, we noticed that there were very few places for families to hang out and relax that also provided good quality food, coffee, and craft beer. We wanted to create the kind of place that we wanted to go; a place where both parents AND kids could enjoy, a place that was a meeting point for the whole community, and a place to meet new people.

“Lingua” comes from the Latin, meaning “tongue” or “language” because that is how we connect and share: through food, drink and language.

So whatever your taste or background, we hope you will join us, relax, and have fun.
